Backed by the energetic minister of sport Gayton McKenzie, the Region 5 Marathon which is scheduled to take place on Sunday 12 October is being billed as a celebration of Southern African unity. A first of it’s kind, the Region 5 Marathon will feature 21km and 10km events pitting some of South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Malawi’s finest long distance athletes up against one another in the City of Tshwane.

“The Region 5 Marathon is not just about running, it’s about showing the world the strength, unity, and talent of our continent. This is a celebration of health and togetherness, and I’m proud that South Africa is part of it. This marathon is not only for elite athletes - it’s for everyone,” explained McKenzie.

Elite performers who will tackle the hilly course run around the Union Buildings in the South African capital will have their sights set on the R50 000 prize purse on offer for the first man and woman across the finish line in the half marathon. But as it is the inaugural event, it’s not just the top runners that will be catered for. McKenzie, who recently took up running himself since his appointment in 2024, says the race is about leading by example and encouraging ordinary men and women to get healthy.

"With big prize money on the table, we are showing our commitment to lifting athletics and creating real opportunities for athletes at every level. It’s about thousands of South Africans coming together, getting fit, and building our nation through sport. I urge all aspiring runners, young and old, to take part in this extraordinary event.”

Zakhele Dlamini, President of the Southern Africa Confederation of Athletics (SACA), described the event as a defining moment for Southern African athletics. “We are excited about the Region 5 Marathon. This historic event is a catalyst for road running excellence in our region and a platform to inspire participation, performance, and pride among our athletics federations. It marks a bold step in strengthening Southern Africa’s presence on the global athletics stage.”
