James Moloi has until the end of the month to give Athletics South Africa reasons why he should not be suspended as President after parliament's Portfolio Committee for Sport revealed that he used the federation’s credit card to buy alcohol at taverns. ASA released a statement yesterday which detailed the process by which the decision to provisionally suspend Moloi was taken by the ASA Board at a marathon 10-hour board meeting, which took place at the OR Tambo Garden Court in Kempton Park on Saturday 25 October.

"The meeting, which began at 9am, was convened to consider the official forensic report procured by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), the country's Olympic mother body. The report followed SASCOC’s probe into revelations made before the Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture regarding the use of an ASA-issued credit card by Moloi," the statement explained.
ASA has formally notified Moloi in writing of his suspension and has requested him to show cause why the suspension should not be upheld. The former CGA President has been given until 31 October 2025 to deliver a written response putting forward reasons why he should not be suspended following SASCOC’s probe report into the use of the credit card.

"The ASA Disciplinary Committee will be called upon to investigate whether any other official of ASA, including its Acting Chief Executive Officer and Finance Manager ought to be subjected to any disciplinary proceedings concerning their role in the use of the said credit card."
The ASA Board has appointed John Mathane, the ASA Deputy President, as the Acting President of Athletics South Africa with immediate effect after the suspension takes effect and the AGN President will continue in that acting capacity should Moloi fail to provide a satisfactory written response by the end of October.
