Prudence Sekgodiso reckons she’s on her way back to her prime fitness and is eyeing another global medal at the Commonwealth Games. Sekgodiso pulled out a good performance at the inaugural SuperSport Simbine Classic on 28 April where she won a competitive women’s 1500m race. She crossed the finish line ahead of African champion, Karabo More (4:11.90) who had beaten her at the ASA Senior Track & Field Championships a week earlier and Carina Viljoen (4:17.02) who finished third.

“After the Nationals I doubted myself,” she told #TheTopRunner. “So I went back to the drawing board and we did some touch-ups here and there. We then went to the Simbine Classic just to test my fitness and I’m very happy about the win and the PB in the 1500m. It shows that we are on the right track,” says Sekgodiso who is coached by Samuel Sepeng.

The 2025 800m World Indoor champion has heaped praise on More who recently won the Africa title in Ghana. The pair kept together on a majority of the race until Sekgodiso unleashed a telling back straight surge and sprinted for home with 150m to go.

"Running against Karabo is amazing. She is amazing. Charne (Swart) was out for some time and now we have her. She is a great athlete," says the two-lap specialist who revealed that she will continue to compete over both 800m and 1500m this season, which includes an appearance over 800m at the Rabat Diamond League on 31 May - the same race she won in 2024.

"This year we have no goal. We just want to play around and race as much as we can. We are going to race both 800m and 1500m this year. We can’t run the 800m the whole year, we need to switch it up a little bit. I wish I could run the 400m but I don’t have that speed. We are going to try lower down my 1500m time, it shows that we are on the right track."

Sporting a new 1500m PB set at the Pilditch Athletics Stadium during the SuperSport Simbine Classic and a lifetime best 1:57.16 over the 800m which she set last July, the 24-year-old is spoilt when she competes at her second Commonwealth Games which take place in Glasgow, Scotland from 23 July to 2 August. Which ever event she chooses to run, Sekgodiso retains her lofty ambition of collecting a second major global medal.

"It would mean a lot to me. My coach wants me to run the 1500m, so it is going to be a bit tricky but my training is going well," she says
