"We didn't want the legacy of the late Buthelezi to be damaged" - Prince Mangosuthu 52km set for 16 August

Organisers of the Prince Mangosuthu Ultra 52km have assured the running community that the 2026 edition of the popular race will go ahead on the 16th of August. Questions had been raised when the event which has been won by the likes of Onalenna Khonkhobe, Nkosikhona Mhlakwana and Ntsindiso Mphakathi did not take place as planned in April. Speaking to the media at yesterday’s (22 July) launch at the Phindangene Royal Palace, the home of late Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) founder and leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Umzinyathi District Municipality Mayor Councilor Thembisile Mchunu explained that the event had to be postponed because the municipality (the main sponsor) didn't have enough funds at the time. 

"We were supposed to have the race in April but due to financial issues we had to postpone it while we are trying to get more funds. We didn't want the legacy of the late Buthelezi to be damaged and we decided to wait for the right timing," said Mchunu.

Despite the financial challenges which led to the postponement, the 8th edition of the race which first run in 2019 remains one of the highest paying ultra marathon events in the province with the winner of the 52km taking home R100 000. This year, the Half-Marathon which was introduced in 2024 edition of the race has been replaced with a 10km event where the first across the finish line will pocket R 5000. 

Run between the Zululand District towns of Dundee and Inquthu, the Prince Mangosuthu Ultra 52km has become a firm favourite amongst runners and non-runners alike. Mchunu says that’s why they had to make sure that the event goes ahead because it contributes immensely to the local, largely rural economy.

"This race attracts runners from all corners of South Africa and neighbouring Southern African countries like Zimbabwe. We have witnessed that when we saw Mike Fokoroni win the first instalment of the race. With that, local business people will benefit especially hotels and the food industry. It's also going to help the youth in terms of getting the piece jobs like being Marshall's on race day.” 

Meanwhile Maxed Elite Athlete manager Martin Ngwenya has confirmed that they will be sending a strong squad including the likes of Jobo Khotoane and Ayanda Ngcobo to compete at the race next month.

“We support the race every year and nothing will change. It’s one of the races that pay good money which comes as a financial boost to athletes. We are sending a big squad and are positive that we are going to do well in the race.”
