Inaugural Beyers Greenstone Run promises to be a sweet race
If the title sponsor is anything to go by then the Greenstone Run promises to be a sweet experience. The inaugural Beyers Greenstone run hosted by Greenstone Hill Running Club (GHRC) is sponsored by one of South Africa's leading chocolatiers, which is sure to sweeten the bitter taste of the notoriously hilly terrain which is to be found in the Ekurhuleni suburb.
"It is the only race where you can literally run for chocolate," laughed Paul Ramlakhan. Speaking on behalf of his club mates, the GHRC Committee Member could not hide his excitement that this fairly new club has taken a step closer to finally having a fully fledged race of its own.
"Greenstone Hill Running Club was formed in 2012 and it was always our dream to host our own race but due to the costs of doing so, it was always a stumbling block. We have since managed to get a sponsor and saviour on board in KEES BEYERS, which means that we can now host the race this year," he explained.
The 8km and 5km run will start and finish at the Stoneridge Center in Greenstone with
participants set to receive a race t-shirt, goodie bag and a novel chocolate medal. Although 8km events officially fall under Central Gauteng Athletics' Fun Run category, Ramlakhan says they have big plans in store for the future of this event.
"l am a runner and part of the GHRC family. I’m so excited that races are slowly returning and we have the privilege to host our own race. Our aim is to add a 10km and 21km in 2023 and by 2027 we want to introduce a 42km and hopefully make it a Comrades marathon qualifier," he revealed. A maximum of 1800 entries are available for the 2022 race which takes place on 27 March. Click HERE to enter.
