On a cool and perfect day for running, Cwenga Nose produced a superb tactical performance to win the third edition of SA Men Run 10km in 29:02 at the King's Park Athletics Stadium in Durban this morning (6 July). Cwenga did well to handle the pressure from Kenyan Benjamin Nyongese, who ended up coming home three second later in his new club colours - the Nedbank Running Club. After running a career best 1:03:47 at the Nelson Mandel Bay Half Marathon last weekend, Pontso Motaung continued his good progress on the road this season by claiming the third spot in a new personal best time of 29:12.

24-year-old Nose pocketed R10 000 for the victory while Nyongese and Motaung walked away with R8 000 and R6 000 respectively. Speaking after the race which is run to raise awareness for the fight against the scourge of Gender Based Violence, Nose said the cool weather conditions in the Indian Ocean city made it easier for contenders to push for the fast times.

"I'm very much happy to win the race,” he told #TheTopRunner. “The weather and the course was good which was a big bonus for us as athletes to run even faster. My competitors gave me a good run on the road which pushed me all the way," explains Nose who earned a 10 000m silver medal behind Nadeel Wildschutt in the SA 10 000m championship race which took place at the Cape Milers Club Middle Distance Meeting in Cape Town in April.

"Overall, I'm pleased. The time I ran today was a very good one and I'm aiming to go even faster as the season progresses. The next stop now is the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K happening next week where I'm targeting to run beyond my personal best time of 28:40. I think that’s possible because some world class athletes have been assembled and they can push me to run faster.”

Race organiser Mike Nzimande draws a deep sense of satisfaction from witnessing the rapid growth of this event. Today’s edition of an event which was first run in 2023, hosted over 500 participants in the 10km run, 10km walk and 5km fun run combined, while the race was attended by top government officials including EThekwini Mayor Councilor Cyril Xaba and KZN Department of Sports and Recreation’s Mr Mntomuhle Khawula.

"We are very pleased with the turn out today. The support I received from the running community, especially over a busy weekend in Durban as it as the Hollywoodbets Durban July yesterday, is huge. I so wish they can support other races too. We are still young but this progress after just three years of existence is immensely positive. Next year, I'm certain that we are going to see even more numbers," said Nzimande.
