'I like to run fast, flat races' - Tadu Nare looks for fast time at Cape Town leg of Totalsports Womens Race
Updated: Jul 26
Two weeks before she broke Elana Meyer's 23-year-old SA 10km Record, Glenrose Xaba produced the second fastest time of her career when she ran 31:57 to finish in second place behind Tadu Nare at the Durban leg of the SPAR Grand Prix. Speaking to journalists afterwards, Xaba was asked why she tended to run faster when the three-time SPAR Grand Prix champion was in the race. The Boxer Athletic Club top runner explained that Nare was a team player who shared the pacing load in the early stages of the race before surging ahead for victory.
It's a quality that has endeared the Ethiopian to the South African public, especially her local competitors who'll be hoping that she can use her 31:14 10km personal best to push them beyond their limits during her next South African race. And that event will be the Cape Town leg of the Totalsports Women's Race on the 9th of August.
Boasting an impressive list of accolades, Nare's achievements include winning the 2022 Copanhagen Half Marathon in a lifetime best 1:06:13, fourth place at the 2022 Valencia Marathon where she set a career best 2:17:36 and fifth position at last year's Chicago Marathon. The Nedbank Running Club top runner says she is looking forward to making her Totalsports Women's Race series debut on course known to produce fast times.
"I entered the Cape Town event because I personally like to run fast, flat races. I like that it’s a women’s only race as we get to push hard at the front of the race. It builds confidence. More importantly I like to represent my club, Nedbank, as they are a great team. Through my performance I want to show that our team is the best in South Africa and the world. My goal on race day is to run my best," she said.
It’s wonderful that the Totalsports Women’s Race honours women as they are the cornerstone of families and communities. Running helps women to be the healthiest versions of themselves. I’m looking forward to making my Totalsports Women’s Race debut in Cape Town on August 9th and invite all women to join me," she added.
Nare will face compatriot Diniya Kedir Abaraya who has also confirmed her participation. Dinya will take part in all three races; Durban on Sunday, August 4th; Cape Town on Friday, August 9th; and Joburg on Saturday, August 17th where singer/songwriter Nkosazana Daughter will entertain the thousands of runners and walkers after they have completed their 5km or 10km races.
