Absa RYC Joburg 10k to shut down M1 and M2 for runners to run on the highway

Not since 2013 has one of Johannesburg's major highways been closed to traffic for running. So there has been tremendous excitement in running circles with the news that parts of the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10k which takes place on Heritage Day (September 24) will be run along the M1 and M2 highways as runners get to experience The City of Gold in a truly extraordinary way.

"This will be the first time since Absa signed as the Title Sponsor of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series in 2021 that the event will be hosted in Joburg. What better way to celebrate than with the announcement of a brand new and exciting route!" said Stillwater Sports MD Michael Meyer. The race organisers have managed a major coup in getting city officials to allow thousands of runners to flood the major arterial's of South Africa's economic hub. Meyer says the leadership of the City of Joburg must be applauded for seeing the value in hosting a mass participation event on this scale in their backyard.

"We are extremely thankful to the City of Joburg for this incredible opportunity that is guaranteed to elevate the event experience on 24 September. Starting in Lilian Ngoyi Street at Mary Fitzgerald Square and finishing in Rahima Moosa Street at Mary Fitzgerald Square, runners can look forward to a fantastic route experience that will include exciting sections of the M1 and M2 Highways," said Meyer as he explained the route that both elite and social athletes will run on race day.

Given that 15 000 people ran through the streets of the inner city during the last edition of this race in 2019, the announcement of the new route is likely to lead to a marked increase in the number of entries. Similar numbers this time around would mean that the Absa RUN YOUR CITY JOBURG 10k will be able to boast the most number of runners everto run on Jozi's highways. And as if that alone isn't enough, runners can look forward to the usual RUN YOUR CITY fanfare which will be presented with that unique Johannesburg flavour.

"Synonymous to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, the Joburg route will once again highlight iconic City of Joburg landmarks and feature lively on route performances by a host of Joburg’s leading performing arts groups. We are also thrilled to welcome back iconic sponsor activations such as the fantastic Absa Vibe Point, PUMA Beat Bolt Sprint, DHL Mile To Go and Chery Vibe Point to mention just a few," confirmed Meyer.

With exactly a month to go until the big day, now is the time to dust off the winter blues start getting ready for race day. As one of the race's sponsors, Puma have come on board by inviting all Jozi runners to join a fun weekly 5K PUMA NITRO Demo Run where participants get to try out the latest Puma road running shoes on a 5km course. The first Demo Run starts at 08:00 at the Kibler Park Recreation Centre on Saturday 27 August. The Demo Run is open to runners of all ages and is free of charge. The only prerequisites are that you sign up and ‘bring the gees’. Once your run is completed, be sure to stick around for the lucky draw.
